SSDA has been established in 1989 under the West Bengal Town & Country (Planning & Dev.) Act, 1979. The SSDA Board now consists of 13 (thirteen) members including Chairman.
SSDA has the rural and Urban areas under its jurisdiction with a total planning area of 106.281 sq. km. The Bolpur Municipality is under the jurisdiction of SSDA.
The functions of the Authority is to prepare and enforce Land Use and Development Control Plan (LUDCP) to prescribe use of land within its area; to prepare development plan for the area and execute these directly or through other agencies; promote industries and housing and commercial complexes develop infrastructure like roads, electricity, water, sewerage and drainage, and help creation of social infrastructure to co-ordinate development activities of all departments and agencies of the State Government or local authorities operating within the Planning Area. Land Use Development Control Plan of the authority has been prepared and shall come into operation shortly.
The Authority has taken various development works in its planning area. Bolpur Bye-Pass Road Project has been taken up to solve the problem of traffic congestion of Bolpur.
The Authority has constructed an important Satellite township i.e. Prantik township. The Authority has also taken up the work for construction of Commercial Complex at Prantik Township. SSDA has taken up a joint venture housing project with Peerless Housing Company.
First phase of a Cultural Complex under the name and style, 'Geetanjali' has been completed. Detailed planning for the 2nd phase is in progress. Village link roads are being developed for better connectivity.
The Authority was constituted in the year 1989 to arrest unplanned growth of fast urbanizing area in Sriniketan & Santiniketan and adjoining areas by bringing about a comprehensive plan for all round development of the areas in coherence with the development of Viswa-Bharati vis-a-vis the need and aspirations of the people not only of the area but also of the state as a whole. LUDCP for the core area has been prepared and notified. Encouraging private development by giving infrastructure support has also been started side by side. The Authority has taken up an area development scheme viz: Prantik Township as a Satellite Township for Santiniketan. The important schemes undertaken by the authority are follows:-Construction of Girl's Hostel for students mainly of Visva Bharati, construction of Indoor Sports Complex at Bolpur, Birbhum, construction of Bus-Truck Terminus at the side of Bolpur By-pass road, implementation of Municipal Solid Waste Management Project, construction of Drainage System, construction of Environment Park at Lahabundh, construction of building for Federation & Common Facility Centre for SHGs and construction of indigenous Tourism Complex.
The authority completed 6 village roads and floriculture project. The major ongoing activities of the authority are construction of Sports Complex, Endogenous Tourism Copmplex, 3 (three) roads and construction of extension of design studio (Ceramic) at Kala Bhawan, Viswa Bharati, extension of Floriculture Project and Environment Park at Laha Bundh. With the active cooperation of SSDA Purna Devi Girls College at Bolpur has been set up under Burdwan University to cater the need of the people of the area.
